FPA ‚ Fire Protection Association Australia

The Fire Protection Association (FPA) of Australia is an organization that promotes fire awareness and works with the Australian fire protection industry. While the organization provides general information on Australian fire protection, safety and information on the technical committees, special interest groups and state committees, it is an additional resource for fire and safety information in general.

Australian Building Codes
The Australian Building Codes Board is the equivalent of the various US building codes. It is a joint initiative of all levels of government in Australia. The boardís mission is to provide for efficiency and cost effectiveness in meeting community expectations for health, safety and amenity in the design, construction and use of buildings through the creation of nationally consistent building codes, standards, regulatory requirements and regulatory systems.

SAI (Standards Association Institute) of Australia
SAI Global is publishing organization based in Australia with offices in Australia, New Zealand, US and through out Asia. SAI Global is a resource for obtaining Australian standards as well as other standards from around the world.

BSI ‚ British Standards Institute
A United Kingdom based organization that providers standards ranging from protection of intellectual property to technical specifications for personal protective equipment, independent certification of management systems, including ISO standards, tests products against standards and third party certification.

EOTC ‚ European Organization for Conformity Assessment
The EOTC is a European Organization, located in Belgium, established by the several European bodies in 1990 for develop harmony between various European standards as well as other standards throughout the world.

Switzerland - Institut Suisse de Promotion de la Securite
The Swiss Institute of Safety & Security, a service organization for risk management and corporate safety and security, works hand in hand with the business world, insurance companies and the authorities for the purpose of loss prevention. The objective is to promote safety and security (fire and explosion protection, process safety, occupational safety, environmental protection, intruder protection) in industrial, commercial and service sector operations in all fields of business.

Sweden – SFPA Svenska Brandforsvarsforeningen (not yet translated to English)
The SFPA is a non-profit association founded in 1919. Not all pages of this web site are translated into English, so if you going to do some research using the site, you might want to brush up on your Swedish. The work performed by SFPA includes publishing of fire protection information, traing, and a lobby group for fire protection issues to the Swedish government.

The National Center for Prevention and Protection (CNPP) is a professional body, recognized by the insurance companies, which develops, disseminates and assesses knowledge and know-how in personal safety, tangible and intangible property safety and environmental safety in every activity and environment. CNPP expertise applies particularly to risk management, general safety, fire, environmental issues, technological risks, burglary and health and safety at work. The CNPP also operates on an international level including involvement in European bodies, cooperation agreements and as a member of international networks.

AIChE ‚ American Institute of Chemical Engineers
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers, AIChE, was founded in 1908. AIChE is a professional association of more than 50,000 members that provides leadership in advancing the chemical engineering profession. Its members are creative problem-solvers who use their scientific and technical knowledge to develop processes and design and operate plants to make useful products at a reasonable cost. AIHA ‚ American Industrial Hygiene Association
AIHA promotes, protects, and enhances industrial hygienists and other occupational health, safety and environmental professionals in their efforts to improve the health and well being of workers, the community, and the environment. The AIHA: was founded in 1939 and is a nonprofit organization with more than 75 local sections. Of the 12,000 members 96 percent are college graduates, 61 percent hold master's degrees, and 6 percent possess doctoral degrees.

AIHA is one of the largest international associations serving the needs of occupational and environmental health professionals practicing industrial hygiene in industry, government, labor, academic institutions, and independent organizations. Occupational health, safety and environmental professionals are concerned primarily with the control of environmental health hazards that arise out of the workplace or the community.

API ‚ American Petroleum Institute

ASME ‚ American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, today ASME International is a nonprofit educational and technical organization serving a worldwide membership of 125,000. CGA ‚ Compressed Gas Association

FM Global
FM was organized in 1835 by Zachariah Allen to reduce the insurance premium on his textile mill by making property improvements to reduce the chance of loss by fire. At the time premium increases for losses were shared among all insuredís, regardless of individual loss history.Ý Over time additional Insurance companies were developed.Ý As the workload increased a dedicated unit was established in 1878 to handle all of the inspection activities.Ý Eventually FM began performing appraisals, adjustments, loss analysis and research associated with preventing fire and other hazards.

NICET ‚ National Institute of Certified Engineer Technicians
NICET, originally formed in 1961, is a certification organization that tests individuals to measure their level of competent against a given trade.Ý In the fire protection industry certifications are provided for Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression, and Fire Sprinkler individuals. NICET provides one of several means for others to determine the level of experience an individual has with regard to a specific discipline.Ý

NIST ‚ National Institute of Standards and Technology
NIST is a non-regulatory agent of the US federal government which was founded in 1901.Ý NIST falls under the Commerce Department's technology administration and whose mission it is to develop and promote measurement, standards, and technology to enhance productivity, facilitate trade, and improve the quality of life and carries out its mission via the NIST Laboratories, the Baldrige National Quality Program, the Manufacturing Extension Partnership, and the Advanced Technology Program.

IACS ‚ International Association of Classification Societies
An association to which Classification Societies belong. IACS is a body that participates in the development of IMO standards and works with its members to establish yet a higher degree of quality in the classification society arena. IACS consists of members and associate members. To become a member of IACS, a classification society must have a minimum of 30 years experience as a classification society with its own classification rules, must class not less than 1500 ocean-going vessels over 100 gross tons with an aggregate total of not less than 8 million gross tonnage and have a professional staff of 150 exclusive surveyors and 100 technical specialists all of whom should be qualified and trained in accordance with IACS procedures.

To become an associate member of IACS a classification society must have a minimum of 15 years experience as a classification society with its own classification rules, must class not less than 750 ocean-going vessels over 100 gross tons with an aggregate total of not less than 2 million gross tonnage and have a professional staff of 75 exclusive surveyors and 50 technical specialists all of whom should be qualified and trained in accordance with IACS procedures.

IMO ‚ International Maritime Organization
A marine standards body originally established in 1948 under the name of Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) and later changed to the IMO in 1982.Ý The IMO is a body of the United Nations and is the rule making body for ocean going vessels, MODUís and the like.

ABS American Bureau of Shipping
ABS is a US classification society with its headquarters in Houston and has offices throughout the world and is a member of IACS. ABS provides certification of companies, products, and ships to various standards such as ISO, IMO, CFRís and other regulations.Ý They are best known in the marine industry as a company that provides certification of vessels, MODUís, and facilities to safety standards required by various governing bodies.

CCS is the Chinese Classification Society in Beijing.Ý CCS is a member of IACS and provides services similar to other classification societies.

CRS ‚ Croatian Register of Shipping
Croatian Register of Shipping (CRS) is a classification society with its primary activities on the eastern Adriatic coast. CRS was originally titled the “Austrian Veritas” when it was founded in 1858 and was the third classification society in the world. In 1918 the Austrian Veritas changed its name to the Adriatic Veritas until it was again changed in 1921 to the Yugoslav Register of Shipping or JR. In 1949 the company when through yet another name change to what it is known as today as the Croatian Register of Shipping or CRS. The head office of CRS is situated in Split, Republic of Croatia.

DNV ‚ Det Norsk Veritas
DNV is a Norwegian classification society with its head office in Oslo with over 300 offices through the world and is a member of IACS.Ý DNV operates in multiple industries but primarily in the Maritime, Oil & Gas, Process and transportation industries. In the marine they provide certification of Vessels, MODUís, and facilities to safety standards required by various governing bodies.

GL ‚ Germanisher Lloyd
GL is a German classification society with its head office in Hamburg and a number of other offices throughout the world and is a member of IACS.GL provides services similar to other classifications to include certification of vessels, MODUís, and facilities to safety standards required by various governing bodies.

IRS ‚ Indian Register of Shipping
The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is an internationally recognized independent ship classification society, founded in India in 1975 and is an associate member of IACS. Based on the present rules of IACS, IRS will be eligible for membership status in 2005 providing they meet the other requirements of membership.

KR ‚ Korean Register
KR is a Classification Society which, as an independent third party, provides ship owners, shipbuilders and insurers with verification services according to the regulations established by international conventions, as well as its own classification rules.

LR - Lloyds Register of shipping
LR is a United Kingdom is an independent risk management organization founded in 1760 to examine merchant ships and classify them according to their condition. ÝBesides being a classification society, LRís current operations involve management systems, land-based industries, railways, and oil and gas.Ý LR has more than 200 offices throughout the world and is also a member of IACS.

RINA ‚ Registro Italiano
RINA is a joint stock company, in charge of the operational activities of the Foundation Registro Italiano Navale, a private, non-profit making institution, established in Genova by a group of shipowners and underwriters in 1861 and one of the oldest classification societies in the world.Ý RINA provides assessment, inspection, certification and research activities in accordance with national, EU and international laws relevant to materials, projects, technologies, products and installations, including the performance of work commissioned by Public Administrations and other Authorities.Ý RINA is also a member of IACS.

RMRS ‚ Russian Maritime Register of Shipping
RMRS is a classification society which was established on December 31, 1913 to supervise the construction of ships. In 1923 the Russian Register was renamed the Register of the Soviet Union, thereafter - Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS). Since 1969, RS has been a member of IACS.

ClassNK ‚ Nippon Kaiji Kyokai
A Japanese Classification Society originally formed in 1899 and origanlly known as Teikoku Kaiji Kyokai.Ý ClassNK provides services similar to other classification societies and is a member of IACS.

IADC – International Association of Drilling Contractors

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a global organization that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. These serve as a basis for national standardization and as references when drafting international tenders and contracts.

Through its members, the IEC promotes international cooperation on all questions of electrotechnical standardization and related matters, such as the assessment of conformity to standards, in the fields of electricity, electronics and related technologies.

IEEE – Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
The IEEE (Eye-triple-E) is a non-profit, technical professional association in over 170 countries. The IEEE publishes technical standards in areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics industries.

IMSA – International Municipal Signal Association
Membership is made up of persons employed by a governmental organization (city, state, federal, provincial, etc.) and private corporations who are interested in promoting public safety. The Association's objective through education and certification is to improve the efficiency, installation, construction, and maintenance of public safety equipment and systems by providing information to its membership on traffic signals, fire alarm systems, radio communications, signs and markings, roadway lighting, public safety dispatching and other related systems.

ISA – International Society for Measurement and Control
Founded in 1945 as a nonprofit, educational organization, ISA has expanded its technical and geographical reach to become a resource for 38,000 Members and thousands of other professionals and practitioners in more than 110 countries around the world. ISA promotes advancement in the theory, design, manufacture, and use of sensors, instruments, computers, and systems for automation and control in a wide variety of applications. ISA is a leading technical training organization and publisher of books, magazines, and standards. Italy - AIAS (Italian Association of Safety, Health & Environmental Professionals)
AIAS founded in 1975 is an Italian association that dealing with occupational safety, health and environmental protection (OSHEP) issues. AIAS is an independent, private and no-profit institute. ÝAnd is a unit of the European Agency for Safety and Health at work by ENSHPO and IFAS (International Federation of Associations of Specialists in Occupational Safety and Industrial Hygiene) which includes Safety Associations from the major industrial countries. AIAS is a member of CFPA-E (European Confederation of Fire Protection Associations).
